Asphalt Shingles vs. Metal Roofing: Which Is Right for Your Home?
When homeowners weigh a roof replacement, the decision usually comes down to two options: asphalt shingles or metal roofing. Both are excellent. The right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay, and how much you value low maintenance.
Upfront cost
Asphalt architectural shingles are the clear winner on price. A typical home might cost roughly $9,400–$18,000 to re-roof with shingles, compared with a metal roof that can run 1.5 to 3 times that amount. If cash flow today is the deciding factor, shingles are the pragmatic choice.
Lifespan and long-term value
Here metal pulls ahead. Architectural shingles last 25–35 years, while a quality standing-seam metal roof lasts 40–70. When you divide cost by years of service, metal is often cheaper per year — it simply requires a larger upfront investment to get there.
Hail and storm resistance
In hail-prone regions this is a serious consideration. Metal roofing can be manufactured to Class 4 impact ratings, the highest available, and it shrugs off wind far better than shingles. Modern impact-rated shingles have also improved dramatically, but metal retains the edge — and many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 systems.
Energy efficiency
Metal roofs with reflective coatings and a ventilated air gap can meaningfully reduce cooling costs, especially in sunny climates. Light-coloured shingles also reflect more heat than dark ones. Neither is a magic fix, but metal generally performs better thermally.
Appearance and resale
Shingles suit virtually any architectural style and come in hundreds of colours and profiles. Metal offers a distinctive, modern look — and standing seam in particular is increasingly desirable. Both can add resale value; the right answer depends on what buyers in your neighbourhood expect.
Maintenance
Metal wins here too. Shingles gradually shed granules, may crack or lift, and need periodic inspection. Metal is largely maintenance-free, though it should still be inspected after severe storms and its fasteners checked occasionally.
Our recommendation
If you are budget-conscious, plan to move within ten years, or want maximum design flexibility, premium architectural shingles are an excellent, honest choice. If you are planning to stay long term, live in a hail zone, and want to invest in a roof you will likely never replace again, metal is well worth the premium.
