How to Spot Hail and Storm Damage on Your Roof

How to Spot Hail and Storm Damage on Your Roof

After a hailstorm, the damage on your roof is rarely visible from the driveway. Shingle damage happens at the surface — bruising the mat and knocking off protective granules — so a roof can look perfectly fine from ground level while its remaining lifespan has been cut in half. Knowing what to look for helps you decide whether to call a professional.

Start with the easy clues

Before you look at the roof itself, check the metal on your house. Dented gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing and even air-conditioning units are strong evidence that hail was large enough to damage shingles too. If the gutters are visibly dented, book an inspection.

What hail damage looks like on shingles

  • Bruises. Soft, spongy spots where the mat has been crushed — often dark and shiny.
  • Granule loss. Bare asphalt patches where granules have been knocked away, exposing the mat.
  • Cracks and tears. Split shingles, especially where hail hit an already-brittle area.
  • Lifted or missing shingles. Wind often accompanies hail and can peel shingles back or off entirely.

Wind and water damage

High winds crease and lift shingles, break the seal strip and tear ridge caps. Once a shingle is unsealed, the next rain gets underneath it. Look for shingles that are curling, flapping or lying in the yard, and check whether ridge caps along the peak are intact.

Do not diagnose from a ladder

Walking a storm-damaged roof is dangerous — the surface may be compromised and the shingles slippery. If you suspect damage, stay on the ground and call a professional. A proper assessment uses close-up photography, and often a moisture meter, to document what is actually happening.

Why timing matters for insurance

Most policies expect storm damage claims to be filed within a set period, often a year from the storm. Damage that is documented promptly — with dated photographs — is far easier to claim than damage discovered a year later. That is why a free post-storm inspection is one of the smartest things a homeowner can do.
